Post subject: Excel Keeps Crashing... Again!
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>office>excel (more info?)

A few weeks ago I posted that Excel keeps crashing on me whenever I
try to Save a workbook. The problem resolved itself, but now is back.
It appears to be a specific workbook that has about 200 lines of
entries in it. Any effort to Save or Save As... or to copy and paste
the data into another workbook causes Excel to quit out and I get the
error message "The application Excel has unexpectedly quit."

I'm using Excel X, and have run the latest Microsoft Office update
(10.1.5) but still it crashes. I'm on a Dual Processor G4 1 GHz Mac
running OS X (10.2.8). Any advice appreciated.

First, try resetting your disk permissions, though I don't think
that's the real problem (but I've seen weirder things solved that
way):

Run the Disk Utility (in the ./Applications/Utilities
folder). From the First Aid tab, click "Repair Disk Permissions".

Can you save as Web page? If so, reading it back in should get rid
of the corruption. Or can you use Edit/Move or Copy Sheet to move
your sheet(s) to a new workbook?

If you have access to Windows Office XP/2003, XL02/03 has an
advanced file recovery capability.

I've also had success in recovering corrupt workbooks using
OpenOffice:

<a rel="nofollow" style='text-decoration: none;' href="http://openoffice.org" target="_blank">http://openoffice.org</a>

which runs under X11 (the Unix X Window system):

<a rel="nofollow" style='text-decoration: none;' href="http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/" target="_blank">http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/</a>

It's not a trivial installation, but it can be done.

Tried that. No luck. Tried booting from the OS X install disk and
tried repairing the disk. Still no luck.

Tried all of the above. Still crashes.

I don't. :(

I've never delved into the Unix side of my Mac. It's a bit
initimidating, especially just to uncorrupt a dang Excel file. But I
don't see any other options listed here yet, so perhaps into Unix I
go.

Thanks for the input.

After digging up an archived version of my problem file, I find that
even this old version (which I know use to work fine) crashes now upon
trying to save. Which leads me to think it's the app. Is there
anything I can do, save deleting and re-installing the blessed thing?

Well, you should try the following first:

1) Repair Disk Permissions:

OS 10.2.x: Run the Disk Utility (in the ./Applications/Utilities
folder). From the First Aid tab, click "Repair Disk Permissions".

OS 10.1.5: Run Repair Privileges (same folder, or download from
Apple:

2) With all Office apps closed, move the Microsoft folder out of the
~:Library:Preferences folder and start XL. It will regenerate the
Office and XL preferences. Does the save work now? If so, move
preferences you want to keep (e.g., Word, Erage, Powerpoint) from
the original Microsoft folder into the new one.

3) If you do decide to delete and reinstall, make sure you run the
Remove Office application from your Install CD's Value Pack folder -
it's the best way of getting rid of *all* Office-related files.

Thanks J.E. Tried options 1 and 2, but still the same crashing
problem. I just ordered Panther and will wait until I upgrade the OS
to reinstall Office. Thanks for your time and thoughts.
