Post subject: Out of Memory Error in Excel 2008
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>office>excel (more info?)

I'm working on a spreadsheet that has about 10 sheets, but it's not a huge project. As I am working I get an "Out of memory" pop up window that keep reappearing after I click the "OK" button. This will repeat indefinitely until Excel crashes. I've lost changes when this happens. I'm on a new macBook with 1G of memory. I don't see any known issues for this. I do have an error report - pasted below:

This happens to me without fail on every spreadsheet - "Out of memory"
on a MacBook Pro 2GB. As an example, one spreadsheet has 2 work
sheets with 3 columns each. And only 50 rows. Its an IP register, no
formula...

Sigh. It also frequently crashes when copying a cell to another sheet.

Hi,

Maybe the excel file is corrupt. I think you can try a popular Excel
file recovery tool called Advanced Excel Repair to repair your Excel
file. It is a powerful tool to repair corrupt or damaged Excel files.

Detailed information about Advanced Excel Repair can be found at
http://www.datanumen.com/aer/

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aer/aer.exe

Hope this will help.

I also got an out of memory message the first day I used it. It also has crashed on me.

I have just recently switched from PC to Mac (the new MacBook Pro) I purchased Office 2008 but am also experiencing this out of memory problem and not always with the same file. This typically happens when trying to create a pivot table.

I have also noticed (looking at istat) that when using Excel the memory usage goes up to 1.5 gig of the 2 I have on the machine. This happens with spreadsheets created in this version and with very little data. Switching to other applications then obviously also generate an out of memory error. This then results in the machine just hanging.

Any advice?

I am also having this problem regularly with a new (i.e. wiped disk clean) install of Leopard and Office 2008. Occurs most frequently when I am attempting to copy a range of cells. I am using very small sheets (three sheets, only about 20 rows, 10 columns) with very little calculation.

On one occurrence, after pressing the OK button on the 'Not enough memory' error message, Excel actually created a new workbook that was a copy of the sheet that had focus. Very weird, and indicative of a big problem in the code, IMHO. I may have to install my old Windows version of Office 2003 on my Boot Camp partition if this isn't fixed soon...

For those of you seeing this:

1) Have you installed the 12.0.1 update?
2) Would you be able to send me a system profile?
3) If you have a specific file that you always encounter this with, would it
be possible to send that file to me?

Thanks,

Hello folks - any update on this? i am also seeing this on pretty
much every file and it occurs about once every 30 minutes. I am also
running 12.0.1 but this was occurring in 12.0.0 as well. Let me know
if you need any information from my machine.

Thanks.

We've been working to get a consistent repro case for this, but are having a
hard time. Every report seems to be a little bit different. Eric sent me a
file, but on a MBP with almost the same specs as his, I don't see the
problem.

It would help a lot if you could a) send me any file that encounters this
problem consistently (patmcmil@microsoft.com), b) send me a system profile,
c) tell me exactly what steps usually lead to the Out of Memory alert? Is it
when creating pivot tables as it was for Eric, copying a range of cells as
someone else reported? Or is it something different?

Thanks for your help. I hope we can get to the bottom of this.

Pat

I encountered this error this morning. I too am using Excel 2007 for Mac on a MacBook Pro with the latest/up-to-date OS. I was creating an Excel spreadsheet with three worksheets. The main worksheet contains a list of text problem descriptions from a trouble ticketing system. the second worksheet contains a list of concatenated column contents from the third worksheet.

I was (painstakingly) working my way through the list of text problem descriptions and assigning a category from a pull-down list of problem categories (contained in a column on one of the other worksheets).

I had completed just over 200 of them when the Out of Memory error occurred. I let the app die and restart. I allowed Excel to send the exception info off to Microsoft.

When I attempted to continue after Excel restarted I noticed that the values from the pull-down list are still in place for each item that I assigned a category from the pull-down list, but they are only text now - no data validation list in the cell anymore.

Man. This is no fun at all. The whole point of the pull-down list was for efficiency, which has just now gone out the window!

Pat, I will send you the document that I was working on when this occurred. If you have any way to fix it (it must be corrupted somehow) I'd sure appreciate it.

I am happy to report that Time Machine has saved my little project. I was able to recover the file from two hours ago and I can now continue.

Pat, please let me know if you need the un-corrupted version of this file for comparison purposes.

Thanks and sorry for the delay. Actually, yes, it would be very helpful to
have a copy of the file before it became corrupted. Please go ahead and send
directly to me: patmcmil.RemoveThis@microsoft.com.

Thanks,

Pat

Just a quick note on this from me. I'm working on an Excel spreadsheet
originally made on a PC. The out of memory thing happens after just a
few minutes of working with the file when I use the Save-command. I'm
also working up against a PC-server, So this might be a mac-to-pc
issue.
Let me know if you need any more info, cause this is getting on my
nerves. I have to restart Excel about 50 times every day now.
